Signed PDFs are by definition something you'd rather not hand to a third party. Professional engineering seals, architect sign-offs, notarised documents, building-permit submittals, RFP responses — these all carry weight precisely because their integrity is verifiable. Uploading the unsigned PDF to a cloud service to apply the signature, then downloading the signed result, introduces a step that compromises the chain of custody. LocusBIM keeps signing entirely on your desktop: your unsigned PDF, your seal, your computer, your output file.
What you can sign with
Custom image stamps. Import a PNG or SVG of your professional seal at any size. LocusBIM remembers the stamps you've saved so you can apply the same seal across many drawings in a set without re-uploading.
Pre-built professional stamps. Approved, Approved as Noted, Rejected, For Construction, Issued for Permit, Preliminary, Bid Set, Record Drawing, and the rest of the standard A&E review-cycle stamps — ready to use, customisable in colour and border style.
Hand-drawn signatures. Sketch your signature with a trackpad, mouse, or stylus. Save it as a reusable stamp. Place it on the signature line of every contract document for a project without redrawing.
Text stamps. Date stamps, project-number stamps, sheet-revision stamps. Configurable per-project so a single click on a drawing stamps the right date, revision number, and your initials.
How it compares to cloud signing services
Professional seals: getting the dimensions right
Provincial engineering and architectural associations specify exact dimensions for professional seals — typically 1.5" or 38mm diameter for engineering, with variations by discipline and province. LocusBIM lets you pin a stamp's display size in real-world units so it renders at the correct dimension on every PDF, regardless of the drawing's scale or page size. Once you've configured your seal once, every subsequent placement is a single click.
For Canadian Architecture and Engineering firms
LocusBIM is built for Canadian A&E workflows. Provincial PEng / OAA / OAQ seal templates ship pre-loaded; revision stamps follow Canadian drafting conventions; the date format is consistent with CSA standards. Crucially, signed documents never leave Canadian jurisdiction — there's no cloud upload, no third-party SaaS processing, and no risk of a US-based signing service being subpoenaed for your client's privileged drawings.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sign a PDF without DocuSign / Adobe Sign / HelloSign?
Yes. LocusBIM has a signature + stamp toolset built into the desktop app. Drop your professional seal, signature image, or a custom text stamp on any page, position it, flatten it into the PDF, and save. No third-party signing service, no account, no annual subscription.
Is the signed PDF a legal digital signature?
LocusBIM produces visual signatures (image stamps placed on the page) by default — appropriate for professional engineering seals, architect signatures, and the vast majority of A&E firm sign-offs in Canada. For cryptographic digital signatures (the kind verified by Adobe Reader's signature panel), LocusBIM Professional supports importing PFX/P12 certificates and signing with them. The legal weight depends on your jurisdiction and signing practice — your firm's legal advice supersedes ours.
What signatures can I add?
Three kinds. (1) Custom stamps — drop a PNG/SVG anywhere on the page. (2) Pre-built professional stamps — Approved, Approved as Noted, Rejected, For Construction, Issued for Permit, and similar standard stamps. (3) Hand-drawn signatures — sketch on a touchpad or tablet, save, reuse across PDFs.
Are signed PDFs uploaded anywhere?
Never. LocusBIM is a desktop app — every PDF is opened, signed, and saved locally. There is no LocusBIM account; signatures aren't synced to any service unless you explicitly use the LocusSync feature (and even then, only between machines you control).
Can I add a professional engineering seal?
Yes. Upload an image of your seal (PNG or SVG, transparency supported), set its size in inches/mm, and place it on each drawing. LocusBIM remembers your custom stamps across sessions. Many provincial engineering associations require seal placement at specific dimensions — LocusBIM lets you pin the dimensions so you don't have to eyeball them every time.
Does the recipient need LocusBIM to view the signed PDF?
No. The signed output is a standard PDF — opens in Adobe Reader, Preview, Bluebeam, any browser, any device. The recipient never needs to install LocusBIM. The signature is baked into the page (flattened) so it can't be moved or removed by downstream readers.
Beyond signing
LocusBIM is a full PDF + BIM platform. The same desktop app splits, combines, annotates, runs coordination workflows with BCF round-trip, and links PDF drawings to 3D models. See pricing for the full feature breakdown.
